New Idea for an EVE Video

What ya reckon bout this one?

Don't know if I'll finish it. Sort of a test of the flashing effect. Not perfect, but worth a go I think.

  1. Pace and mood of the music didn't fit the initial pictures: music was immediately full-speed, whereas the pictures were more contemplative.

Personally, I don't like lyrics in video songs, because they distract from the going ons on the screen. Yea, I broke my own advice in my One Good Video, but only because the lyrics were nearly nonexistent. However, I admit that (first half not withstanding) the lyrics you chose might have worked, especially at the end when zooming out to the multitude of game clients showing things being destroyed.

The use of the flashing (or "white-outs" as I call them - pro video editors probably have their own term of them) I wasn't a fan of. Flashes for me are attention grabbers, shouting "Hey! Pay Attention! Something important is about to happen!". Myself I associate them with jump-cuts, or fast-forward stroboscopic effects. Something more important than just a Rifter flying along. I have use them myself, in my One Good Video, but only in combination with fade-outs at the beginning, to set the proper 'hurry up and wait" mindset.

An appropriate use in my mind would have been showing the Rifter flying along, interrupted by flashes in an increasing frequency (think "dot … … dot … dot dot… dot dot dot dot dot"), with the last flash cutting to a cyno lit and a hot drop capital/black-ops fleet jumping in.

Ok, you could use flashes to emphasize a break in the music and mood (as opposed to the other way around), but I think you still have to make the motion on the screen more stroboscopic. Meaning, if your flash effect lasts 5 frames, feel free to cut out 26-52 frames of your background footage.

    1. Hehe :)

Thanks for the longest and most detailed comment on any blog post I've ever written ever, and also informing me that there are some people (you at least :P) reading my blog.

As for the flashes and things, unfortunately, because I'm on a full-time students wage of next to nothing, I don't have any movie making program than Windows Live Movie Maker, and ask it what frames is.... go on I dare you :P I'd live to have the Adobe movie suite, but still money again.

And the clip choice- lets face it, I was being lazy :P Might have worked if I'd done more of the song but oh wells. Maybe you'd prefer some of my other EVE videos on the channel? I do love making them :)

    2. Give me time until the weekend to catch up on your other videos :)

I wish I could point you to free or cheap movie editing programs on Windows, but I have no experience with them (not even WMM). I heard they exist, but that's about all. But I think you get the idea - for every flash, try jumping ahead for something .75s to 1.5s in the main video.

And you never know who reads your blog - at least once I year I get surprised by a random comment from someone I never heard of, and who probably won't comment again. But they are there :)
